Philander Smith College (then named Walden Seminary) was established by the Freedmen’s Aid Society of the United
Methodist Church to make education available to freed slaves. This institution has been creating dynamic minds and leaders since 1877.
The division of Academic Affairs strives to help
students at Philander Smith College get the most from
their academic college experience. The philosophy
of the division is to operate on “what is best for
the students and what is best for the institution.”
